p.1 A Praiseworthy Effort - We are glad to learn that a few ladies of this City are engaged in taking up a subscription on behalf of the families of the poor fellows who lost their lives by the shipwreck of the Schooner Ellen, of this port, during the recent storm. The reader will recollect that the vessel went to pieces off Wellington, and that no tidings have since been heard of the ill-fated crew. Five of the families thus left destitute reside in this city, and the present effort in their behalf is deserving of all commendation. We know from an inspection of the subscription list that the appeal has not been in vain; and certain we are that the generous donors will be amply repaid in the knowledge that they have contributed to protect families which have, at the beginning of winter, been deprived of those nearest and dearest to them, as well as of all means of support. We hope the list will be published, when the subscription is completed. [Hamilton Spectator]
