3. Mar i n e News - c o n t 'd . It w ou l d appear that S o c a n a v Inc. has a c q u i r e d ano th er tanker for its fleet. Reports ind ic at e that the c o mp an y has p u r ch as ed IO NI AN EAGLE, (a) ER RIA PILOT (83), (b) K O M I Y A (89), a P a n a m a n i a n vessel of 4796 Gross Tons, built in 1982 and until r e c e n t l y owned by Ad ri a t i c Tankers. The ship was p u r ch as e d in V e n e z u e l a and left St. Anna Bay on De ce m b e r 6th, bound for Halifax. She c l e a r e d H a l i f a x on De ce m b er 17th, en route to Shelburne, Nova Scotia, a p p a r e n t l y for refit. IO NI AN EAGLE made one Se aw ay trip back in 1989. Strangely, the entire p u r ch ase seems to have been sh ro ude d in s e c r e c y and even at this late date no c o n fi rm ed details are available. It now seems a p p r o p r i a t e to give more det ail s of the for ma ti on of Great Lakes Bulk Carriers, w hi ch r e c e i v e d brief m e n t i o n in our last issue. The new o r g a n i z a t i o n will operate six te en s t r a i g h t - d e c k bulk carri ers owned by Canada St e a m s h i p Lines Inc., Mi se n er Shipping, and Pioneer Sh ip pin g Ltd. (James Ri c h a r d s o n & Sons L t d . ), and o w n e r s h i p a p p a r e n t l y will remain with the o r i gi na l fleets. A l t h o u g h all r e m a i n i n g vessels of the Mis en er and Pioneer fleets will be involved, C . S. L. r e p o r t e d l y will keep two of its s t r a i g h t - d e c k e r s for its own St. Law ren ce River trades, and none of its s e lf -u n l o a d e r s will be involved. The p o ol in g a r r a ng em en t is ex pe ct ed to reduce o p e r a t i n g costs and to keep the ves se ls viable in the grain and ore trades, in a m a n n e r somewhat similar to that used by the Alg oma Cent ral Corp. and ULS Inc. in their own pool k no wn as Se aw ay Bulk Carriers. Presi den t of Great Lakes Bulk C a rr ier s will be Dav id K. Gardiner, h er et of o r e p r es id en t and C . O. O. of M i s en er Shipping. C o n s i d e r a t i o n has been given by local o f fi cia ls to the p o s s i b i l i t y of o b t ai ni n g the 243-foot U . S . S. W I L L IAM SBU RG, the former yacht of U . S. Preside nt H a r r y Truman, and b r i ng in g her to Morrist own , New York, on the St. La w re nc e River. The ship, p r e s e n t l y lying in the Poto mac River in much deteriorated co ndition, might be used as a breakwater and tourist at tr a c t i o n at Morris to wn , but any a c q u i s i t i o n of the W I L L I A M S B U R G would de pen d upon financing arrangements and the possibility of o b t ai ni ng n a ti ona l h i s to ri c land ma rk status for the ship. Mea nwhile, n a t i o n a l land ma rk status has been gran ted by the Na ti ona l Park Service to the Lake M i c h i g a n c a r f e r r y CITY OF MILWAUKEE, which c u r re nt ly is lying at Elberta, Michigan. The d e s i g n a t i o n is very im po rta nt to the efforts of the F r a n k f o r t - b a s e d group a t t e m p t i n g to p r e ser ve CITY OF MILWAUKEE, but u n r e s o l v e d are El b e r t a 's o b j e c t i on s to effo rts to have the steam ferry mo o r e d at Elb er ta as part of a perm ane nt m u s e u m facility. The first m i d - w i n t e r tanker run up the St. Mar y's River with fuel oil for the Ca na d i a n Soo took place on F e b r ua ry 1st and 2nd, as EN ER C H E M CA TA LY ST made the river trip with the as si s t a n ce of Uni ted States Coast Gu ard i c e b r ea kin g efforts.
