This was a p l e asant and c o nvenient place, all the more so beca u s e we could move u p s tairs into our regular m e e t i n g room after supper for the programme. Recently, however, its operator reti r e d and the Ship Inn closed, so we were forced to find a new spot for our dinner. What better place, we wondered, than on the w a t e r f r o n t ? Accordingly, we r e s erved a banquet room aboard the former Y u g o s l a v liner JA D R A N which, since 1976, has been m o o r e d at the foot of Yonge Street and serving as C a p t a i n John's Restaurant. M a n y me mbers will be a t t e n d i n g the dinner and e n t e r t a i n m e n t programme, so it seems a p p r o p r i a t e to ou tline the h i s t o r y of this vessel. JA D R A N was built in 1957 by B r o d o g r a d i l i s t e Split, at Split, Yugoslavia. She m e a sures 295'6" x 42'10" x 15'3", 2564 Gross, 1297 Net and 763 D e adweight Tonnage. A twin- s c r e w ship powered by 4,800 braking h o r s e p o w e r Sulzer diesel machinery, she had a m a x i m u m speed of 1 9 . 5 knots and a service speed of 18 knots. As designed, she had a c c o m m o d a t i o n for 172 First Class, 38 Tourist and 1, 000 deck passengers. Her normal "Adriatic Line" route for her owner, Jad r a n s k a L i n i j s k a Plovidba, took her from Venice to Split, Dubrovnik, Corfu, Piraeus, Itea, Sveti Stefan, Kotor, Zadar, Rijeka, Opatija and Pula. Purchased by John Letnik in 1975, JAD R A N cros s e d the Atlantic but en coun t e r e d such nasty c o nditions during the cr ossing that her c rew feared for their safety. She e v e n t u a l l y ar rived at Toronto on the e v e n i n g of No vember 20, 1975, and was tied on the east side of the Yonge Street slip, where she has re mained ever since. J A D R A N opened to the public during 1976 and joined (and later replaced) "Captain John's Ha rbour Boat R estaurant", the former Owen Sound T r a n s p o r t a t i o n C o m p a n y Ltd. ferry NORMAC, w h i c h since has been moved to Cleveland. We sincerely hope to see you aboard J A D R A N on the ev ening of May 9th. Please re member to reserve your tickets early. Details may be found on the cover of this issue. * * * * * A R E T U R N TO SERVICE Lake shipping observers have ea gerly been aw aiting the return to service of the A m e r i c a n Stea mship C o m pany's self- u n l o a d e r JOHN J. BOLAND (III), which was re f u r b i s h e d in 1991 after having been laid up at the U . S. L a k ehead since Dec ember of 1984. It was a n nounced in March that the BOLAND would re-enter active service on April 15th, when she is scheduled to load a cargo of coal at the Superior Midwest Energy Terminal, and then sail for Marquette, Michigan. The r e a c t i v a t i o n of the BOLAND leaves the 86-yea r - o l d moto rship NICO L E T as the only inactive member of the A m e r i c a n S t eamship Com p a n y fleet.
