BROOKES It is wi t h great sadness that we note of longtim e Tor onto Marine H i storical M ay 19th, 1993, his 77th birthday. the passing, at Hamilton, Ontario, So ciety member Ivan S. Brookes, on Ivan became int er ested in lake ships at an early age, and in 1930 he e n c o u n t e r e d our late friend and T. M . H . S. treasurer, Jim Kidd, on the To ro nt o wat er front. The two frequ e n t l y met to bicycle along the banks of the We ll an d Canal (at first the third, and then later the "new" canal), taking p h o t o g r a p h s as they went. Ivan se rve d with the Royal Ca nadian Air Force during World War Two and then in 1947 joined the staff of the Steel Comp a n y of Canada L t d . , which gave him the o p p o r t u n i t y to watch the scrapping of many old lakers at the co mpa ny' s H a m ilton premises. Ivan was ve r y much intereste d in the w a t e r w a y s of the lakes and vi cinity as well as the ships w h i c h sailed them, and he put together a number of exc el le nt albums f e aturing p hotographs and the hist o r y of the various ports, locks and bridges. Of part i c u l a r interest to Ivan were the g e o g rap hy and sh ipping activiti es of the lower St. Lawrence River, and his most imp or ta nt reference work on this subject, The Lower St. L a w r e n c e , was pu b l i s h e d in 1974 by Freshwater Press, Inc. The m a j o r i t y of Ivan's extensive c o l l e c t i o n is now held by the Institute for Great Lakes Research, in Perrysburg, Ohio. One of his most important h i s t o r i c a l efforts, however, is his u n p u b l i s h e d manuscript, Hamil t o n Ha rb o u r 1 8 2 6 - 1 9 0 1 , w hich is a c h r o n o l o g i c a l record of v i r t u a l l y all m ar in e a c t i v i t y in the H a m i l t o n area during those years.
