The Wolfe Island Council was advi s e d that the Province, seeking to adjust fares on all of its various ferry operations, w o u l d institute a charg e of $ 6 . 50 return for cars and $ 1 . 00 return for passengers, effective J a n u a r y 1st, 1994. Needless to say, the s u ggestion that rides aboard the 19 75- bui lt ferry WOLFE IS LANDER III would no longer be free brought howls of pr ote st fr om islanders, but the Province has r e m ained firm in its int e n t i o n to collect fares to offset the major ex pense of ru nning the ferry. The 1993 season, the second for the cross - l a k e o p erations of the fledgling Lake M i c h i g a n Ca rferry Service Inc., was a good one, with BADGER ca rrying large crowds of passengers on her route betw e e n L u d i n g t o n and Manitowoc. A l though only BADGER has o p e r a t e d reg u l a r l y for the new owner of the c a r f e r r y line, the co mp an y still w ould like to restore CITY OF M I D L A N D 41 to service and, eve ntually, even the long-idle SPARTAN, a l t hough the latter p r o ba bl y wo ul d requir e repowering. Unfortunately, BADGER's 1993 season was mar r e d whe n she struck bottom in Ludington harb o u r on June 20th. It was evident that she had sustained damage, and so the c a r f e r r y was hust l e d off to the s hip yar d at St urgeon Bay, Wisconsin, w here she was drydocked. It was found that the da mag e was such that an 8 8 - f o o t - l o n g section of shell plat i n g on the port side w ould have to be replaced, at a cost of almost $ 3 5 0 , 000. A l though we are not certain when BADGER actually re turned to service, her owner was hoping to have her ru nning again no later than July 5th.
