The GL E N G A R N O C K name was given to the st eamer wh e n she was acqui red in 1921 by James P l a y fair for what was to be co me his Glen Ste am sh ip s Ltd. in 1922, and it r e flected Playf ai r' s S c o t t i sh heritage. We noted, however, that we had been unable to trace any place by that name in any atlas available to us. Thanks to T . M . H . S. c o mm it te e member and Progr amm e Chairman, Gor don Turner, the pr ob l e m has been resolved. It a p p a r e n t l y is no won der that we could not find G L E N G A R N O C K in any atlas, because it is a very small village indeed. It is located inland from the Firth of Clyde, a p p r o x i m a t e l y eight miles s o u t h east of Largs, in the A y r s h i r e or St ra th cl yd e area of Scotland, southwest of Glasgow. We have no idea what c o n n e c t i o n and this tiny community, but we locating it on the map for us. there ma y have been betw een James are in de bt ed to Gordon Turner for * * * * * A D D I T I O N A L M A R I N E NEWS It is repor te d that ULS Int er n at io na l p u r ch as ed two o c e a n- go in g ships of ap pr o x i m a t e l y 38 , 000 Gross tons each du r i n g the autumn of 1993. Ac qu ir ed from the South India S h i pp in g Corp. were the 1987-built CHENNAI PERUMAI and CHENNAI OO K K A M , w hi ch have been rena med TH O R N H I L L (III) and RI CH MO ND HILL (II), respectively. Long a deni ze n of the lakes was the 1964-b uil t C. C . G . S. KENOKI, latterly based at A m h e r s t b u r g but retired late in 1991 and renamed (b) 902 in 1992. Sent to Prescott for lay-up, she arr iv ed at Mon tr ea l on July 21, 1993, after being pu rc ha se d by Ex p o r t a t i o n s Roxani Inc. She s u bs eq ue nt ly was res old to Cia. Mar. de Cabota S. A., Panama, and she sailed from Montreal, bou nd for P an ama nia n waters, on N o v e m b e r 10th. The Desga gn es tanker T H A L A S S A DESGAGNES, whi ch was the subject of reports in various earlier issues, fi na ll y ran her trial trips off Rimouski on Dece mbe r 18, 1993. Nev er th el es s, she did not enter service until Jan ua ry 26th, when she shifted to St. Romuald, where she loaded a cargo for Montreal. In the Nove mb er issue, we noted that the De sg ag ne s group had p u r ch as ed HULL28 (spelled correctly with the hyphen), the former east coast ferry CONFEDERA TI ON . We learn that De sgagnes has yet to do any work on her to p r e pare her for service, and it is possi ble that she may not be used as ferry but rather c o n ve rt ed for cruise service on the Gulf and east coast. In our earlier report, we i n c o r r e c t l y i d en ti fi ed C O N F E D E R A T I O N ' s former op er ato r as Marine Atlantic. In Fact, she was m a n a g e d for Transport Canada by N o r t h u m berland Ferries Ltd. The St. Lawrence Seaway A u t h o r i t y has put its 1954-built tug WEL LA ND up for sale as she now lies at Port Weller. In future, the ha nd l i n g of buoys in the Wel la nd Canal will be done by the C a na di an Coast Guard. * * * * * Playfair at least
