That feature was a pleasure to write, and we are pleased that so many members enjoyed reading it. We apologize, however, for one rather egregious "typo" which appeared on line 5, in paragraph 5, on page 5 of the issue. (Was "555" our beast in that issue? ) Please correct your April issue to reflect that the launch date for the MONTREAL was Monday, FEBRUARY 3rd, 1902, rather than March 3rd. The other references to February (re the press report, etc. ) were correct. * * * * * WIN A TRIP ON A LAKER T. M. H. S. member Vern Sweeting advises that the Huronia Museum at Midland is holding a fund-raising raffle on a trip for four adults aboard an Algoma Central Marine ship. The winner will be able to choose a return trip either up or down from the Welland Canal, to be taken during the 1999 navigation season. Tickets are $10. 00 each and may be obtained from Huronia M u s e u m , P. O. Box 638, Midland, Ontario L4R 4P4. The draw will be held on July 16th, 1999. * * * * * MARINE NEWS In the April issue, we reported on the opening of the various canals, but we regret that the information provided concerning the St. Lawrence canals was in error. The "official" first ship of the season was C. S. L . 's ATLANTIC HURON, upbound with iron ore for Hamilton. But the "actual" first ship through was CANADIAN MINER, downbound with corn for Quebec. Both passed through the canals on April 1st, the MINER clearing the Eisenhower Lock at 4: 08 a. m., and ATLANTIC HURON at 12: 05 p. m. The first salty of the season, passing through the same day, was the Liberian-registry STOLT ASPIRATION, bound for Clarkson with a load of hydro crackers. The St. Mary's Falls Canal at Sault Ste. Marie opened just after midnight on the morning of Thursday, March 25th, when the upper gates of the Poe Lock swung open to admit the Interlake Steamship Company's steamer CHARLES M. BEEGHLY en route downbound. It was the second year in a row that an Inter lake ship opened the Soo Locks. In 1998, the affiliated Lakes Shipping C o . 's LEE A. TREGURTHA took the honours. The first salty through the Soo was Fed Nav' s LAKE ONTARIO, which passed up on April 8th. http://www.knowyourships.com
