Perils on the Lakes - The "Buffalo Commercial Advertiser" publishes a summary of the maritime disasters on the Western Lakes in 1844. Number of vessels ashore, crippled, or lost, 30, 16 of which were totally lost; amount of tons destroyed 2,100, whole amount of loss $141,000 - attended by a loss of 51 lives.
