p.2 Traffic on the Welland Canal - During the present season we expect to be enabled to publish the vessels passing through the Canal, which we have not had an opportunity of previously doing since it became Government property. Room could not be spared in this impression for the list up to the present date, but we shall catch up next week, and afterwards give the return weekly. It will be useful as showing the amount, direction and articles of traffic.

From the opening of navigation to the last of April, 185 vessels passed through, of which 127 went up - 84 from Oswego and 43 from Canadian ports; of the latter, 23 were to American ports, (11 from this place,) 14 to Canadian ports, and 6 to St. Catharines and Thorold. There were 27 downwards to Oswego, and 41 to - 18 being also from - Canadian ports. The cargoes from the other side are nearly all of grain, from this side flour principally.

In the same time 47 scows passed up or down, carrying principally stone, gravel, staves and hoops. In 1844 106 vessels passed through the first 17 days of navigation - 160 this year. [St. Catharine's Journal]
