It looks like the lemoyne. Built in 1926, scrapped in 1969

It looks to me that the car ferry shown in this picture is the "Vacationland" and not the "City of Petoskey"

I am thinking the freighter is the M.S. Benson Ford (1) http://www.mhsd.org/photogallery/roger/Ford_Ryerson6_29.71rl.jpg or the M.S. Henry Ford II http://www.boatnerd.com/pictures/historic/perspectives/HenryFordII/HenryFordIIjh37.jpg the stack looks like the *older yellow/blue stack. If you look at the bulkwarts aft of the forward cabins near the cargo deck the Lemoyne has an extension for the fairleads. http://www.boatnerd.com/pictures/historic/perspectives/Lemoyne/Lemoyne61-gb-MHSD.jpg In your picture you can see the fairleads about 6 feet aft of the forward cabins like on the Benson and Henry.

100% Henry Ford II or Benson Ford (1)

Don't know about the freighter, but the Vacationland and the other auto ferries stopped running at the Straits of Mackinac when the Mackinac Bridge opened in November, 1957, so this photo has to have been taken between early 1952 when the Vacationland went into service and November 57 when she was laid up.
