Before closing our spring review a visit was made below the Cataraqui Bridge. Along the track of the K. & P.R.R., on each side, we noted piles of square timber, part for transhipment to Quebec, and a large portion belonging to the Montreal Transportation Company, to be used in the construction of another barge during the coming summer and winter.

A little further down are the schooners Mary Merritt and Ionia. The former having been run aground will have to be extensively repaired before going into service. The adventures of the crew last fall were duly reported by us.

The sloops Sovereign and Alice Mary lie side by side. Nothing has yet been done upon them.

The steam barge Rose has had her cabin rebuilt. She will again ply on the Rideau Canal.

At. W.B. & S. Anglin's wharf the City of Kingston lies. She has been built of good material, but unfortunately has not been as renumerative to her owners as they expected. For two seasons she ran to Ottawa, but without success. Later she ran from Picton to Belleville. During the past two summers she has been in ordinary. This year she will possibly remain at the dock.

The tug Lily will resume her towing on the "raging canawl."

The usefulness of the steamer Grenville being gone she ceases to run. She formerly plied on the Rideau.

Wharf Improvements.

Most of the wharves are receiving the usual spring repairs. Probably the most extensive work in this respect is going on below the bridge. The K. & P. Railway Company are building a long wharf. It is hinted that in course of time the bridge will be removed and the Kingston harbor thus enlarged. The company owning the wharf, it is said, will lay a track so that cars can be run out upon it and vessels loaded direct from them. Good idea.

The Queen's wharf, Tete de Pont Barracks, has been thoroughly repaired by the Government.

The railway esplanade, in front of the market battery, is also undergoing rebuilding. The old and decayed crib work has been replaced by new.

The Montreal Transportation Company will extend the wharf purchased by them last fall, known as the Berry property, lately belonging to Messrs. Calvin & Breck. The new crib work will be prepared below the bridge and sunk during the summer.

The wharf at the Penitentiary has been extended and repaired. For such purposes great sticks of timber have been drawn through the city by convicts for some time. The new pier will ex(tend) out over 300 feet into the lake.

A Few Suggestions.

For the protection of lives we propose a few suggestions. Let the wharves be well lighted. The citizens remember with regret the loss of life that occurred last year, partly because of the darkness. Again, by Act of Parliament, it is required that there should be supply of ropes and long poles on all the wharves, to be used for the rescue of persons who may accidentally fall into the water. Let these matters be attended to before or by the opening of navigation.

Marine Matters Elsewhere.

Port Dalhousie harbour is entirely free of ice.

The ice is stiffening up under the influence of this cold weather.

The steamer Utica may be placed on the route between Picton and Napanee.

A daily line of steamers between Alexandria Bay and Montreal is talked of.

A new steam yacht for use on the St. Lawrence is now being built at Alexandria Bay.

The schooner Wanderer, from Port Hope, sailed into Toronto harbour on the 4th of March.

The owners of the Jessie H. Breck have a charter to carry timber from Hamilton to Kingston at $30 per 1,000 cubic feet.

The Welland Canal, with twelve feet of water, is to be opened on the 1st of July, Dominion Day, certain.

The steamer Armenia is likely to run between Trenton and Ogdensburg during the present season, making semi-weekly trips.

During the past thirty years, the earliest date on which the ice is known to have left the river at Montreal, was the 2nd of April, 1859.

About $4,000 is being expended on the propeller California. Her cabins have been extended, and twenty additional staterooms added. She will run between Montreal and Chicago.

The steamer Flower City has been chartered to run in connection with the Island Belle next summer, from Cape Vincent to Alexandria Bay, stopping at Clayton, Round Island and Thousand Island Park.

The yacht Katie Gray has been hauled out at Belleville. It was found that a large hole was made in the bottom, just behind the keel, and her rudder and internal machinery carried away by the recent ice shove.

Cataraqui Bridge - last year's apparatus for opening draw bridge proved unsatisfactory; new apparatus can open it in 60 seconds.
