p.2 Caught In A Gale - The schr. Oliver Mitchell was caught by the gale on Friday night unloading coal at Evanston pier. About half-past ten o'clock the master saw that he had to make an effort to get his vessel to sea or she would pound and grind herself to pieces. Lines to the value of $250 were used up holding her, and she finally cast off. With one jib and the forestay she succeeded in crawling her way to Chicago, where she arrived in safety.

The departures from Garden Island were: Schrs. G.M. Neelon, Toledo, light; Sligo, Point au Sable, light.

Mr. H.A. Calvin returned this morning from the Canal, whither he was called on account of the mishap by the barge Oriental.

The report concerning a drubbing being given to Capt. Saxie Brooks, by Gough, is wholly untrue. His vessel cleared from Garden Island for Lake Superior and has not been in Toledo at all, nor did he see Gough at this or any port.

Capt. Jeffreys says that vessels that have to clear light for the upper lakes are not paying expenses, and that the general outlook is anything but encouraging. Several other experienced captains who were interviewed on the same subject gave similar accounts.

Capt. Jeffreys, of the schr. Sligo, who was in the canal when the barge Oriental broke the gates of lock 17, says that the accident was not caused through the inability of the crew. The vessel was running at the time, the night was dark, and the man who was snubbing the barge on the bank slipped and fell and could not check her in time. He says the same thing might have happened to any vessel, no matter how well manned.

Last Tuesday the schr. Wm. Elgin left Kingston with iron ore for an American port. About midnight she ran upon Four Acre Shoal, which lies to the west of Nine Mile Point. A message was sent back for a tug when the Chieftain went to the rescue. The schr. was found in a very leaky condition. She will be pulled off and brought to Kingston, and her cargo being taken out, docked for repairs.

Yesterday at the St. Lawrence & Chicago Forwarding Company's dock, Portsmouth, there were discharged the schooners Mary, from Thorold, of 7,000 bush. wheat; the C. Gearing, Hamilton, 6,000 bush. of wheat; the Downey, Whitby, 7,000 bush. of peas. The tug Jessie Hall left with two barges for Fairhaven to load coal for Montreal. The tug Frank Perew arrived here with three barges from Montreal with 800 tons of railroad iron. The tug then left with 14,000 bushels of wheat for Montreal.
