p.1 County Nominations - politics - mentions that $5,000 was spent for dredging at Washburn, money wasted; "a foreign dredger was called in. His machine stayed in one spot and made a channel fourteen feet deep though the locks would only take a six foot boat. The sides were already falling in and filling the channel again."
