"previous to the opening of the St. Lawrence Canals, their shipments of produce downwards in one year had reached an amount equal or nearly equal to half a million of barrels of flour. Such has not been the case since the opening of the canals, as the direct shipments from the west have materially reduced the extent of business here in the forwarding of produce."
