p.2 The Presque Isle Canal - The Belleville Daily Argus is urgent for the construction of a canal to connect the water of the Bay with the Lake at Presque Isle. The canal, says our contemporary, "is again receiving a large share of the intention of the inhabitants of the Counties of Hastings, Prince Edward, and Newcastle. At a meeting of the inhabitants of the township of Brighton in Newcastle, it was resolved that the Council of that Township should take stock to the amount of £5000 in the Murray Canal Company, and to take immediate steps to procure a charter for the construction of the work. Had this been done in the outset, the Canal would now be a paying concern. In connection with this we are pleased to find Mr. Murney has notified the Government that he intends to inquire whether it purposes connecting the waters of Lake Ontario with the Bay of Quinte. We are pleased further to learn, that several influential and wealthy gentlemen in the City of Toronto, have promised to give a helping hand next summer, if the stock is not taken up before. This, with the amount which would be subscribed by the aforesaid interested Counties, together with the £18,000 which the Government is pledged to advance, would build the Canal and some to spare. Then why delay? Surely there has been sufficient talk about this comparatively paltry work. Its advantages have been frequently set forth and we need not therefore repeat them now. We shall wait patiently for the reply to Mr. Murney's enquiry, trusting that it may be favorable."
