Lake Insurance - New Rates

The following rates of insurance on cargoes of grain and other produce, on board steam and sail vessels navigating the lakes, were adopted at the recent convention of underwriters in this city: -

From ports on Lake Michigan to ports on Lake Erie - Grain, by sail or steam vessels, during April, 2 per cent; May 1st to August 31st, 1 1/4; Sept. 4th (sic - should be 1st) to 14th, 1 1/2; do. 15 to 20th (sic - should be 30th), 1 3/4; Oct. 1st to 14th, 2; 15th to 31st, 2 1/4. Flour, provisions, etc, by sail or steam during April, 1 1/2 per cent; May 1st to August 31st, 7/8; Sept. 1st to 14th, 1 1/8; 15th to 30th, 1 1/4; Oct. 1st to 14th, 1 1/2; 15th to 31st, 1 3/4; Nov. 1st to 14th, 2 1/4; and 15th to 30th, 2 3/4; Add 1/4 per cent from ports on east side of Lake Michigan. Add 1/2 per cent on ports on Lake Ontario, and 1 per cent to Montreal via St. Lawrence Canals. Insurance limited to 20th Nov. by sail, and 25th Nov. by steam, from ports on Lake Michigan.

From port of Cleveland (sic - should be ports west of Cleveland ?) on Lake Erie to Buffalo or Tonawanda - Grain during April, 7/8; May 1st to Aug. 31st, 5/8; Sept. 1st to 14th, 7/8; 15th to 30th, 1; Oct. 1st to 14th, 1 1/4; 15th to 31st, 1 1/2; Nov. 1st to 14th, 1 3/4; and 15th to 30th 2. Flour, provisions, etc., during April 5/8; May 1st to Aug. 31st, 1/2; Sept. 1st to 14th, 5/8; 15th to 30th 3/4; Oct. 1st to 14th, 7/8; 15th to 31st, 1; Nov. 1st to 14th, 1 1/4; and 15th to 30th, 1 1/4.

From Cleveland to Buffalo or Tonawanda - Grain, April 3/4; May 1st to Aug. 31st, 1/2; Sept. 1st to 14th, 3/4; and 15th to 30th, 7/8; Oct. 1st to 14th, 1, and 15th to 31st, 1 1/4; Nov. 1st to 14th, 1 3/8; and 15th to 30th, 1 5/8. Flour, provisions, etc., April, 1/2; May 1st to Aug. 31st, 3/8; Sept. 1st to 14th, 1/2, and 15th to 30th, 5/8; Oct. 1st to 15th, 3/4; and 15th to 31st, 7/8; Nov. 1st to 14th, 1; and 15th to 30th, 1 1/8.

From Cleveland to any port on Lake Ontario - Grain, April 1 1/4; May 1st to Aug. 31st, 1; Sept. 1st to 14th, 1 1/4; and 15th to 30th, 1 3/8; Oct. 1st to 14th, 1 1/2; 15th to 31st, 1 3/4; Nov. 1st to 14th, 1; and 15th to 31st, 1 3/4; Nov. 1st to 14th, 1 (sic - should be 2); and 15th to 30th, 2 1/2. Flour, provisions, etc., April 7/8; May 1st to Aug. 31st, 5/8; Sept. 1st to 14th, 7/8, and 15th to 30th, 1; Oct. 1st to 14th, 1 1/8; 15th to 31st, 1 3/8; Nov. 1st to 14th, 1 1/2; and 15th to 30th, 2.

From ports on Lake Erie west of Cleveland to any port on Lake Ontario, Grain, April, 1 3/8; May 1st to Aug. 31st, 1 1/8; Sept. 1st to 14th, 1 3/8; and 15th to 30th, 1 1/2; Oct. 1st to 14th, 1 3/4; and 15th to 31st, 2; Nov. 1st to 14th, 2 3/8; and 15th to 30th, 2 7/8. Flour, provisions, etc., April, 1; May 1st to Aug. 31st, 3/4; Sept. 1st to 14th, 1; 15th to 30th, 1 1/8; Oct. 1st to 14th, 1 3/8; and 15th to 31st, 1 5/8; Nov. 1st to 15th, 1 7/8; and 15th to 30th, 2 3/8. From ports on Lake Erie west of Cleveland, to Montreal add 1/2 per cent to Lake rates.

From Cleveland to Montreal, via St. Lawrence Canals - Grain, April 1 3/4; May 1st to Aug. 31st, 1 1/2; Sept. 1st to 14th, 1 3/4; 15th to 30th, 1 7/8; Oct. 1st to 14th, 2; and 15th to 31st, 2 1/4; Nov. 1st to 14th, 2 1/2; and 15th to 30th, 3. Flour, provisions, etc., April, 1 3/8; May 1st to Aug. 31st, 1 1/8; Sept. 1st to 14th, 1 3/8; 15th to 30th, 1 1/8 (sic - should be 1 1/2); Oct. 1st to 14th, 1 5/8; 15th to 31st, 1 7/8; Nov. 1st to 14th, 2; and 15th to 30th, 2 1/2.

From Kingston or Ogdensburgh to Montreal, via St. Lawrence Canals - Grain, 1/4 ? per cent, and flour, provisions, etc., 1/2.

Deck cargo on sail vessels on the Lakes insured at treble rates in April, September, October, and November, and double rates in May, June, July and August; and insured against total loss of packages only. The minimum rate of loss to make a claim shall be 10 per cent of the whole value insured on deck. [Montreal Gazette]
