p.2 A Melancholy Accident - On Wednesday last the brig Black Hawk, just returned from Liverpool, England, with a cargo of pig iron and salt. As she was entering the outlet lock of the Welland Canal at Port Colborne, C.W., a seaman named Rollins, of Rockland, Maine, got one of his legs entangled in the hawser used in bringing the vessel up, and had it severed from the body below the knee. Captain Taylor seeing his danger rushed to his assistance, when he also got entangled, with a similar result. Capt. Harrison, of the tug Underwriter, immediately took the two sufferers on shore, where each of their legs was amputated below the knee.

This is a sad ending to a successful voyage for Capt. Taylor, who has shown himself the star master of the Lake and Liverpool fleet in this voyage, and is deserving of great credit for the seamanship and skill displayed on the voyage out and back.

The Steamers Canada and America from Lake Ontario are reported to have safely reached New York, and have into dock to prepare for the more lengthened journey to California.
