p.3 Narrow Escape - We have been informed by a passenger by the steamer Champion, which arrived here yesterday afternoon, that that vessel narrowly escaped being destroyed by fire during the passage from Montreal. On Thursday, while the steamer was proceeding from Prescott to Kingston, a fire was discovered in the wheelhouse. The flames were just bursting through the wood-work and were making headway when first observed. The machinery for extinguishing fire on the vessel was in very perfect order, and by the prompt use of it the flames were soon got under. The damage done was trifling. The passengers speak very highly of the conduct of the captain and crew under the dangerous circumstance. [Globe]
