p.2 The gale on Thursday week was exceedingly severe on the western lakes, and was attended on Lake Huron with some damage to shipping. The bark Merrimac had sails lost and split, and some running and standing gear carried away. The schooner John Kursby lost foresail and foreboom. The schooner Alvin Bronson lost an anchor and chain; the schooner Czar lost big anchor and 60 fathoms of chain; the schooner William Fisk lost big anchor; and the barge Tawas lost both anchors. The bark Western Metropolis and the James Newagh were wrecked and have gone to pieces. The following vessels also sustained damage:- Schooners White Cloud, Dick Somers, Resolute, B.F. Davy (forestaysail and jib), Cornelia, Plover, and the barques Favorite and Sunshine.
