p.2 Marine News

Messrs. Jones and Miller's wharf - The schr. Cape Horn, from Toledo, arrived with 13,351 bushels of corn. The barge Rover left for Montreal with 11,950 bushels of corn, ex schr. Gibson, and 1,352 bushels of peas, ex schr. Annie Minnes. The schr. Eliza Munlin (sic - Quinlan ?) is loading railroad iron for Port Hope.

Messrs. Coulthurst and Macphie's wharf - The propeller Europe, from Montreal, is loading 100 tons of pig iron, and the propeller Argyle, from the same place, is taking on 150 tons of railroad iron, both for Chicago. The barge Elk departed last night for Montreal with 11,850 bushels of corn.

Montreal Transportation Company's wharf - Arrived: Schrs. Winora, from Toledo, 14,806 bushels of corn; Gazelle, from Wellington, 6,500 bushels of wheat; Tecumseh, Kincardine, 11,559 bushels of wheat.

Messrs. James Swift and Company's wharf - The steamer Corinthian passed up last evening, and the propeller Georgian and steamer Kingston passed down today from Hamilton to Montreal. The steamer Picton, which grounded in the Belleville harbour on her passage down the Bay of Quinte yesterday, touched on her way to Montreal this morning.

Messrs. Holcomb and Stewart's wharf - The schooner Mary Foster, from Belleville, arrived with 4,700 bushels of peas. The barge Snipe left for Montreal with 12,300 bushels of wheat.

Rush at Chicago - A letter from Chicago dated Wednesday, says: Our harbour remains blocked with ice. About 100 vessels in sight, working very slowly in. It may take three or four days before they can get through. Forwarders are asking 15 cents on wheat, 14 cents on corn, and 9 cents on oats to New York. There is a great scarcity of boats, and with large amount to go forward, they may possibly obtain their rates.

Barges on Fraser's Shoal - A despatch says that the barge Dauntless, with corn from propeller East, and barge Wanda with corn from propeller East, wheat from schr. Ocean Wave, and peas from Kingston, are both on Fraser's Shoal at Edwardsburg. They are not making water.

Quick Time - The propeller Europe, Capt. James McMaugh, of the Merchants Line, made the passage from Milwaukee to Port Colborne in three days and nine hours, carrying 17,500 bush grain. She also runs from Kingston to Port Dalhousie in the fast time of 14 hours and 28 minutes.

Port Colborne, May 16th - Down - Propeller Maine, Chicago, Ogdensburg, general cargo; schooner Grace Whitney, Toledo, Ogdensburg, lumber; Trinidad, Chicago, Oswego, wheat; Scud, Ontario, Cleveland, pig iron.

Up - New Dominion of Picton, Kingston, Milwaukee, pig iron; Albatross, Kingston, Bay City, light; W.Y. Emery, Kingston, Port Burwell, light; Schr. B. Folger, steam barge Wechford ?, steam barge Wm. Cowie, schr. Anna Maria.

The Forwarding Business - We are highly gratified at the success which has attended the efforts of our forwarders in managing the volume of trade at this port. Early this spring, we wrote some pretty strong articles on this subject, and the immediate effect was to stir the gentlemen who were engaged in the business at this port to a little more activity. We are, therefore, glad to chronicle the fact that so far, the elevating capacity of the harbour has been found equal to all the stress that has been laid upon it, and we assume from certain events in our knowledge that it is capable of even greater things. Several new elevators are actively engaged, and several old ones have been revamped, and made serviceable, and the supply of barges has been materially increased. In all this we recognize the spirit of enterprise, and we are glad that the lessons of last summer have borne such good fruit. With an expansion of trade which must necessarily ensue every year now, greater facilities will be needed for handling the same, and it will be a source of pride to us to know that the interests of Kingston will be fully guarded. This spirit of enterprise is seen abroad in many different directions, and the lesson deduced from it is that the old Limestone City is at last awake.

Chancery Court - Gildersleeve vs Wolfe Island Canal Co. - In this case judgement was given for the plaintiff, the question of costs being reserved.

Hinckley vs Gildersleeve - This case has been going on today.

Harbour Improvement - There will be a meeting of the Joint Committee of the Council and Board of Trade at 7 o'clock this evening at the Council Chamber, to make arrangements for proceeding to Ottawa.

- A deputation from Lake Huron has had an interview with the Hon. Minister of Public Works, with a view to obtain Government aid towards the construction of a Harbour of Refuge at Meaford, Georgian Bay. One of the engineers of the Department will report on the matter.

-Twenty barges laden with two and a half million feet of lumber, and towed by three steamers, left Ottawa a couple of days ago for the United States market. They were to run the Long Sault, the Grenville Canal not being yet finished.
