p.2 High Freights - The lake freights for grain from Chicago to Buffalo are ranging as high as 18 cents per bushel; and there is a scarcity of craft at that. Many of the vessels wintered here are chartered to carry staves from Hamilton to Garden Island, on their first trip at the rate of $23 per M. "Old probabilities" receives many a blessing from the captains who are impatient for the opening of navigation.

-western shippers and others concerned in lake commerce anxiously awaiting opening of navigation; large quantities of western wheat to ship.
