Convention of Lake Underwriters

The Buffalo Courier states that the Executive Committee, appointed by the Underwriters' Convention which assembled in that city in February last, have issued a call for a similar convention to be held at the American Hotel in that city on January 8th, 1856. Among the subjects to be discussed will be the prevailing models of lake vessels, and their carriage of cargo beyond their custom-house measurement; the incapacity of many vessel masters in time of peril, and their desertion of their vessels when stranded or in danger; the negligence of owners of vessels in not protecting and sending forward the cargo after disaster; the leading of another cargo after disaster, without proper previous examination of the vessel; the adoption of pro rata rates on hulls for unexpired portions of the season; the extension of policies on delayed voyages after Nov. 13th; the expiration of policies on Lake Superior, and reports of local surveyors to the "General Surveyors" at Buffalo.
