The Serpent in Silver Lake
We hear this monster has again made its appearance in Silver Lake. The people of Perry don't say much respecting the "critter," as they are charged with "humbugging" the public ; but many of them are firm believers in the "article" and that, too, of an enormous size. We have not heard from friend Gillet yet on the subject, but shall expect to soon. Our information comes by way of Rochester.
The snake was seen, it is said, but a few days since, by two boys who were walking on the shore. Some fifteen feet of the creature could be seen above water. he was moving slowly down the lake. The boys threw stones into the water in the direction of the monster, which caused it to turn about, and after going up the lake a considerable distance, it sank and disappeared from view.
Others who have heretofore been skeptical about the snake, alleged that they have seen it. It is indeed strange that persons of the first standing in the community where they reside should tell the tales they do about this matter. If they do not believe what they say; and if they do believe, the illusion is stronger still and more difficult to be explained.
We are told that one or more persons are constantly watching for the snake on the shores of Silver Lake. If he appears by day he cannot well escape observation.
