p.3 Marine News - The Franklin is being put in shape for the season.

The Pierrepont will make the attempt to cross on Thursday.

Capt. S. Fraser, who has been up Lake Erie fitting out, returned to town on Saturday and reports the prospect of very late shipping. The lower part of Lake Huron and Lake St. Clair are blocked with ice and there is 150 miles of it of a very solid nature in Lake Erie. The captain doesn't think that vessels will be able to leave Buffalo till about the 15th or 20th of May. Some that had loaded in Detroit during the winter have been obliged to take out their cargoes and ship them to Buffalo by rail.

The Ice - ...The lake is now open down as far as Simcoe Island, and the river is visible above Cedar Island, so that a steamboat could go from the latter to Cape Vincent around the foot of Long Island.
