p.2 Loss of the Shannon The Schooner Shannon, owned by the Messrs. Acton of this Village, sprung a leak about twenty miles out from Oswego, on Saturday last, and sank in a few minutes. She had a cargo of coal on which there was no insurance. The leak seems to have been forward of the hold, and the first that was known of it was when one of the crew went into the forecastle he found it partially filled with water. The water then came in so fast that preparations were immediately commenced for abandoning the vessel. The mainsail was a new and valuable one, and it was cut loose with the intention of taking it away, but being found too heavy for the small boat, it was made fast to the boom and thrown overboard. The crew then took to the small boat, and had only got a few yards from the Shannon when she went down. With hard labor, having only one oar, they got to Oswego, where they procured a tug, and went back to recover the mainsail, but did not succeed in finding it. There was a small insurance on the vessel.
