Capt. Van Alstine Opened Station at Big Sandy

In connection with the earthquake damage to the Big Sandy Coast Guard station, oswego residents recall that the late William Van Alstine of this city opened the station and was keeper there seven years.

Mr. Van Alstine was a Civil War veteran, having served four years. After the war he sailed on the Great Lakes for a few years. Under his management the Big Sandy station was one of the best of its type and had a large force of men.
