Description
- Full Text
The parties to the suit in the U.S. District Court at Chicago, growing out of the collision between the LADY ELGIN and the schooner AUGSTA, which resulted in such almost unparalleled loss of life in September last, are in town taking testimony in the case. Mr. Emmonds and Mr. Newberry are counsel for Mr. Bissell, the owner of the AUGUSTA. George B. Hibbard, of Buffalo, and Robert Roe, of Chicago (where the LADY ELGIN was owned), appear as counsel for the steamboat. The suit, aside from the fearful interest connected with the collision itself, will be of great consequence in every point of view. Its result will show where the responsibility for such great destruction of life should rest.
