The new prop. CHICAGO, commanded by Capt. Forman and named in honor of our city, arrived here on her first trip last week, and is now discharging at the dock of Sanford, Hall & Co. She is a noble looking vessel, and is the largest propeller now afloat on the lakes. She was built at Buffalo by Bidwell & Banta, and by them sold to the American Transportation Co., for $50,000. She is 758 tons burthen, 199 ft. keel, and 216 ft. overall. She has fine accommodations for 50 cabin passengers, and can carry in addition 100 steerage. She is provided with 3 life boats, and a sufficient number of life preservers to give one to every person on board. The CHICAGO is very strongly built, of good model and substantial finish throughout. She is provided with an engine from the works of S. Shepard, Buffalo, which is a novelty in propeller engines on the lakes, as it is a low pressure oscillating engine. The boiler is 19 1/2 ft. long and 10 ft. in diameter, the cylinder 38 inches with 3 1/2 ft. stroke. Attached to the engine is one force fire pump, and the vessel is provided with 2 others to be worked by hand, and furnished with 396 ft. of hose, forming a good security against fire. - Chicago Dem.
