The stm. HAZE, recently purchased by the government for a lighthouse tender for the
upper lakes, reached Detroit yesterday from the seaboard. She is a black and rather odd looking craft of 360 tons burthen; length 138 ft., breadth of beam 24 ft.; depth of hold, 10 ft. She was built at Mystic, Conn., of tamarack. Some accounts of her adventures in coming through the "Dominion" will be found in our marine department:

The U.S. stm. HAZE, which was purchased not long ago in New York by the Government for a lighthouse tender, arrived at this port yesterday noon. Commander Harwood accompanied the steamer from the seaboard with Capt. Starkey, who was in his position assumed the duties of navigator. While at Quebec, as is generally known, the officer in command of the British frigate AURORO demanded that the pennant of the HAZE should be hauled down, which, in temporary absence of Commodore Harwood, who was at church on shore, was complied with on the part of the captain. On return of the Commodore he immediately directed it to be hoisted again, stating at the same time to these British officers
that his vessel was responsible to his own Government for the style of pennant she might wear, and to none other. The HAZE was allowed to proceed on to Montreal, at which point all was courtesy from the time of her arrival until her departure. Gen. Averill, the Minister of Finance, politely furnished the necessary permits to proceed on to her destination, from which time no further difficulty was encountered until her arrival at this port.
