Speaking of fast trips, recall an achievement of the R.N. RICE, which we think has never been surpassed in this "neck of woods. This "floating palace," on her last trip, when she left here December 7th made the run from Detroit to Bois Blanc light, a big 20 miles, in one hour and 6 minutes. Another fact concerning this trip is worth mentioning. The night was clear and cold, and Capt. Ben Sweet, who was at Malden at the time, states that he distinctly heard the paddles of the RICE the moment when she was first loosed from her moorings. This affords a striking proof of the great power of her machinery. Although the RICE possesses power and speed in a pre-eminent degree, they are not her only good qualities by at least a score.
