Duluth, July 21 - The new schr. JOHN SMEATON, owned by the Bessemer Co., sailed last night with her maiden cargo. She carried 7,372 gross tons of iron ore and a draft of 18 ft. 1 inch, forward and aft. This is the largest cargo ever carried by a lake boat, breaking the record made by the MANILA by 145 tons.

On June 17 the Superior Shipbuilding Co. will launch at its yard at West Superior the barge JOHN SMEATON, building for the Bessemer Steamship Co.
