John Taylor (Canal Boat), 1 May 1852

Description
Full Text

MAMMOTH CANAL BOAT. - A canal boat bearing the name of one of our prominent citizens - JOHN TAYLOR - arrived from Syracuse yesterday, where she had just been completed by Mr. Jones Duston, an expert builder, with a load of 127 tons. She is one of the most substantially built boats and among the largest if not THE largest, that ever passed through the canal. She was loaded according to the capacity of the canal, and is capable of carrying, when the canal shall have been enlarged, two hundred, and under the escort of a river tow, two hundred and fifty tons. It would not be possible for her to return through the canal loaded. The boats coming east, heavily laden, preventing it; and she is designed more particularly as a river boat. With the proposed enlarged canal, however, she will be able to convey her cargo from Buffalo to New York without transhipment. The scuttle holes, chocks, &c., are all lined with copper or iron and the entire construction is of the most durable and substantial character. Her entire cost, with fixtures, will reach about $3,000 - and her superiority, both in size and finish, will be readily seen when it is stated that the ordinary boat cost from $1,200 to $2,000. Her length is ninety-seven feet. She was built by Messrs. Godard & Hovey, forwarding merchants, No. 98 Pier. - Albany Paper.
