In the early spring of 1915 the gasoline tug HELENE out of Dunkirk, owned and operated by Captain Hugo Hornke, ran out of fuel in a terrific lake storm. The tug and crew spent an eventful night on the rough waters of the lake and by daybreak they were blown ashore on the beach near Angola. The crew was composed of John and Barney Plumbone, Frank Helwig and William Urhnn. - L.V.
