The J. BURTON AYERS (US.243772) was launched at Lorain in the yards of the American Shipbuilding Company in 1943. This bulk freighter was Hull No. 823. Dimsnsions 605 x 60 x 35; 8758 gross tons and 6472 net tons. She was built for the U.S. Maritime Commission as part of the freighter replacement program or World War II, one of 6 similar freighters built by American Shipbuilding Company, and designated as type L6-S-Al. These vessels were powered by a Lentz Poppet-Valve Compound Engine of 21", 21", 50", and 50" diameter off cylinders by 48" stroke, generating 2,500 horsepower. The ship was named for the president or the Great Lakes Steamship Company to which fleet she was assigned, in exchange for obsolete tonnage. Subsequently, the Great Lakes Steamship Company sold its ships, with the J. BURTON AYERS going to the Northwestern-Mutual Life Insurance Company of Milwaukee, under operation by the Wilson Marine Transit Company of Cleveland.
