OLD PERIWINKLE SOLD.
The excursion steamer PERIWINKLE, which came into the hands of P. O. Day this year, has been sold by him to Filcher of Bay City, to which port the steamer will be taken to run in the excursion business. The PERIWINKLE has had a peculiar career. She was built for the United States revenue Service by Whitaker at this port in 1862, and was named PERRY. She was a side-wheel steamer, but instead of paddle-wheels, she had a screw propeller on each side. She could run like the wind about as far as from Buffalo to Erie, but in doing so would burn about all the coal she could carry. After the PERRY was condemned by the government she was sold to Howard H. Baker and others, who comprised the Buffalo & lake Erie Excursion Company. The changed the vessel to an ordinary screw steamer and ran her in the excursion business for several years. Prehudice arose against the boat, however, as she would list heavily under a load of upper deck passengers and was rather unfortunate with grounding accidents. Since 1891 the PERIWINKLE has been laid up in the Erie Basin, and was fast becoming forgotten until o"day bought her this spring. The price O'Day obtained for her is not known, except tht he will get some cash and some Michigan land out of the deal.
