JESSE JAMES, US.222858, Steel Harbor Tug built in 1923 at Manitowoc, Wl by Manitowoc S.B. Co. (Hull #206). Launched as JOHN E. MEYER (2) for Barnet and Record Co. Duluth. 105' LOA x 24'x 14’'7"; 205 GRT. Powered by a 750 ihp triple expansion steam engine and one Scotch marine boiler. Sold to Pringle Barge Line, Detroit in 1940 and renamed b) JESSE JAMES and served as the towing tug for the barge MAIDA. Sold in 1957 to Oglebay Norton Co., Cleveland. Sold in 1964 to Seaway Cartage Co., Detroit. In 1966 was sold to Nickerson Marine Co., Tampa, FL and was towed out of Detroit October 17, 1966 by the tug CENTRAL for Tampa, FL. In 1967 was repowered with a 2875 bhp 16 cylinder diesel engine. Baleen Towing and Transport, Inc., Boothbay Harbor, ME purchased the tug in 1970 and renamed it c) BALEEN. On October 31, 1975 BALEEN caught fire on the U.S. East Coast and sank, without loss of life, thirty miles southeast of Boston, MA.
