From the Montreal Herald - We have much pleasure in publishing the following letter from Capt. Fowell to Mr. Baird, the inventor and patentee of the sweeping paddle wheels for steam vessels: -
      Her Majesty's Steam-Vessel, CHEREOKEE
      Kingston, Jan. 15, 1847
Sir, - Since Her Majesty' s Steam-Vessel MOHAWK has been fitted with sweeping paddle wheels she has been twice out on short trips, and as the alteration proved highly satisfactory, I feel that it is but justice to you to inform you of it. After the first trial I wrote to my Lords of the Admiralty reporting favourably of the wheels - and I am happy to say that, on her going out a second time, my first opinion was confirmed; on that occasion she left the Dock yard in a gale of wind, to go about fifteen miles up the Lake, to assist a vessel in distress, and her performance in the sea way was excellent - the wheels neither producing jar nor vibration, but from their great hold of the water, keeping the vessel very steady.
In my report to the Admiralty, I said: - "The MOHAWK is now fitted with Baird's sweeping paddle-wheels, which answer the purpose extremely well. She is much improved in speed, being at present 9 8/10, but when tried again with the engines in a more perfect state, (they had been taken to pieces and recently put up again) I have no doubt of her making 10 5/9, or eleven knots per hour; former speed 9'; number of revolutions per minute, 27; former, 34; diameter of wheel, 16 feet; former 12' 6"; and consumption of coal 9 bushels; former, 11 bushels per hour."
When the vessel is tried again in the spring, I shall then give you a more detailed account of the result.
I am, Sir, your obed't servant
W.W. Fowell, Commander, and Senior Naval
      Officer on the Lake.
