MINDEMOYA Now Is YANKCANUCK.
Only a comparatively few persons here have heard of the Yankcanuck Transportation Company or the ship of the same name. But the vessel has a close association to a group of person in Marinette.
The YANKCANUCK a pulpwood carrier is owned and operated by Capt. and Mrs. F. Manzzutti, of Hamilton Ont, Canada. Mrs. Manzzutti is the former Eleanor L. Cox, daughter Arthur Cox Sr. River Road Marinette. The YANKCANUCK is the former MINDEMOYA, once owned by Capt. Orin W. Angwall of Marinette.
      Only Composite Hull ship
The transportation company is run by the Manzzuttis and their office is aboard their ship where they also have their living quarters.
There are many ships on the Great Lakes on the Canadian side from 50 to 60 years old, but the YANKCANUCK, built in 1889 in Wyandotte Mich, is the only composite hull ship still in operation. A composite hull ship has oak planking about six to eight inches thick below the water line with steel frame and all steel above the water line. The vessel will be making a trip to Green Bay early in May when passing Marinette a salute of three long blasts and two short blasts is given.
The Manzzuttis had hoped to lay up last winter in Marinette but time ran short and they were unable to deliver their last cargo in this area. They wintered in Owen Sound, Ontario on Georgian Bay.
