BUFFALO HARBOR - A survey is now in progress, preliminary to the commencement of work upon the improvement of Buffalo harbor, which, if fully carried out in accordance with the recommendations of the engineer in charge, will give that city one of the most magnificent harbors on the lakes. The improvements contemplated are an extension of the lighthouse pier upon the present line, 2,100 feet into the lake, and the building from a point opposite the terminus so reached, of a massive breakwater, extending 3,000 feet, or nearly three quarters of a mile, down the river across the Horse Shoe Reef, upon a line nearly direct toward the Black Rock pier.The new breakwater would be nearly parallel with the shore, and a little more than half a mile distant from it. Its construction would of course involve the removal of the existing breakwater of the Erie Basin, (which is a State work), forming a great artificial haven, securely sheltered, easily entered, and spacious enough to hold at anchorage half the commercial navy of the lakes. According to the estimate of this work, the complete execution will call for an expenditure of nearly $1,700,000. Of this sum but $100,000 have as yet been appropriated by Congress, but no great difficulty is anticipated in securing the remainder. The new work will hasten the departure of ice from Buffalo harbor at least three weeks every spring. - [Cleveland Herald.
