MARINE DISASTERS OF 1867
_______
List of Disasters on the Lakes for the Season Just Closed.
_______

Below will be found a statement of the casualties which have occurred during the past season of navigation. It will be seen that the total number far exceeds any former year. Instances of vessels having grounded at various points where the expense of getting off varied from ten to fifty dollars, and numbering ninety-four cases, being secondary in importance, have been purposely omitted, and with those recalled, swell the grand total of disasters for the season of 1867 to 931. Seven propellers have been lost while thirty three grain vessels have passed out of existence, to which may be added thirty more which were engaged exclusively in the lumber trade. Fifteen vessels engaged in the grain traffic the past year have been condemned, and unless rebuilt, will have to fall back to the stave or lumber freighting. Notes:
With your indulgence, I have made the punctuation of all of the abbreviated "first" names (eg W J Preston) uniform, leaving out the periods on all. Hall has the habit of doing it both ways. There's a limit to how accurate a transcription must be - it's the point at which I'm about to go blind looking for tiny dots.             Note that the original has no dividing line between July and August, but it should be somewhere near the mention of the bark GOLDEN FLEECE. Similarly, the divider between September and October would be around the mention of the collision between the bark RED, WHITE and BLUE, and the brig HELFENSTEIN.             Most of the accidents are pretty routine, but some vessels appeared to be wildly off course. The schooner Hattie Earl must have been somewhat awry in a September accident, having lost her jibboom in a collision with a house. The damage to the propeller PITTSBURG in November was almost understandable. She is reported to have "run into a saloon at Chicago." We've all damaged our bulwarks doing that.
