Cleveland, April 24. -- The tug PINOLA, built for the Standard Contracting Company, was launched at the head of the old river bed, opposite the Globe Shipyard, yesterday morning at 11 o'clock. Quite a number of people were out to see the tug go into the water as it was the first end launch that had occurred in Cleveland for some time. The PINOLA went in stern first, and her momentum took her to the other side of the river, but a line soon brought her around, with the assistance of a tug which was lying by.
The PINOLA was built by Mr. Matthew Thomas. The Standard Contraction Company furnishing the materials. The hull is of the best oak, the frames being planked outside and ceiled inside with that material. Her dimensions are 67 feet over all, with 13.5 beam and 7 feet depth of hold. She will have a powerful engine, with double high-pressure cylinders each 9½ x 10½ inches. Steam will be furnished by a Herreshoff coil boiler, tested to 300 pounds pressure. Her wheel is 5 feet in diameter.
The PINOLA is rather yacht-like in her model, and has a fine finish, with deck houses both forward and aft, so that she may be used for pleasure purposes by the officials of the company. She was christened yesterday by Miss Cassie Jones, daughter of Mr. Wyndham C. Jones, President of the Standard Company. The name has a very pretty signification, being Indian for "Bread Winner," as she will be engaged in assisting the company's marine work.
