DETROIT Steamer, in collision with the Brig S.F. GALE
near Chicago.
      Buffalo Courier (casualty list)
      March 17, 1848

      . . . . .

The Mail Steamboat DETROIT, in leaving the harbor on Wed. night, with the mail for the east, came in collision with the Brig S.F. GALE. The GALE racked the steamboat in such a manner as to compel her to return to refit. This caused a detention of the mail which must lie at St. Joseph until the DETROIT is again able to perform her regular trips ------ Chicago Journal.
