Propeller PORTER, on the 'bar' at Conneaut, with part of her deck load
thrown overboard.
      Buffalo Courier (1847 casualty list)
      March 17, 1848

      . . . . .

The propeller PORTER, with a cargo of flour and meal, from Cleveland, encountered a storm off Conneaut yesterday, and at evening in an effort to make this harbor, got on the 'bar' at the end of the piers, where she now lies [12 o'clock]. Two or three hundred barrels of flour and meal were thrown overboard which has drifted ashore west of the harbor, in a much damaged state. The balance of her cargo has been taken out of the hold and stowed here. The PORTER is now working off, and will undoubtedly succeed this afternoon. She has sprung a leak, and has several feet of water in the hold. - Conneaut, Oct. 23.

      . . . . .

PROPELLER PORTER ASHORE. - We learn, by letter received yesterday, from the Captain, that on Friday the engine of this propeller becoming disabled, he sought to run her into Conneaut. She struck however on the bar at the mouth of the harbor, and at the time of writing was aground. For the purpose of lighting her over 150 bbls., corn meal has been thrown overboard. They were taking ashore in lighters her cargo of flour, and the Captain writes, that in a few hours, he will probably have her safe in.
She was leaking some, but not so much that the pumps could not keep her free. - - Cleve. Plain Dealer.
