Full Text

The Schooner GEORGE WATSON, put about when the gale struck her, and soon came in contact with the Brig E.H. SCOTT. When the vessels came together the crash so frightened the helmsman that he leaped aboard the Brig, followed by the mate and the Captain. The only remaining hand was a man who has shipped that day. He seized the wheel when the vessels seperated, leaving him alone, excepting the cabin boy, asleep below at the time, leaving him to manage the vessel as best he could. He called up the boy and they undertook the perilous task of working the vessel into port alone. The Brig SCOTT came in like a race horse and arrived safely in port. The Captain of the schooner supposing his vessel lost reported accordingly. About an hour afterwards however, the schooner came down gallantly and entered the harbor in fine style, showing the Captain that he had been a little hasty in reporting it's loss.
After the schooner had found a berth and tied up the Captain and his deserters attempted to go back on board, but were ordered off by the man who had taken charge of the vessel. He claimed as the Captain and crew had abandoned the vessel, and that he had saved it he was entitled to salvage. He holds the vessel under that claim. - Buffalo Express
