LOSS OF THE BRIG NORTHAMPTON AND SCHOONER PURITAN. - We learn
from a telegraph despatch received last evening, (says the Express) of the loss of the
above vessels. They were lying at the dock at Michigan City afternoon. The PURITAN
discharging a cargo of railroad iron, and the NORTHAMPTON taking in a cargo of wheat
-when a severe gale came on and drove both vessels ashore, carrying away a great portion
of the dock, on which there was a large quantity of railroad iron. The NORTHAMPTON
had in about 7,000 bushels of wheat, and it is hoped she may be got off. The PURITAN
is a total loss. Vessels and cargoes insured.

The Chicago Dem.Press says the schooner PURITAN and brig NORTHAMPTON,
recently ashore at Michigan City, were both in the river on Saturday morning, and
have gone into dry-dock for repairs, the PURITAN at the dry dock of Messrs. Jordon
& Olcott, and NORTHAMPTON at the floating dock of Dolittle & Miller.
The NORTHAMPTON is supposed to require nothing more than re-caulking. The
PURITAN will be thoroughly overhauled. Her upper works are very much broken to
pieces, but the full extent of her injuries will not appear until she is in dock. We
understand that the getting off of these two vessels is greatly attributable to the energy
and perseverance of Capt. Palmer, agent for the underwriters, who has superintended
the unertaking.
