American Republic (Bark), aground on breakwater, 4 Nov 1856

Description
Full Text

Bark AMERICAN REPUBLIC, cargo wheat, drifted onto Buffalo breakwater, got off partially damaged.
      Buffalo Commercial Advertiser
      January 31, 1857 (1856 casualty list)

      . . . . .

The fiercest gale of the season commenced yesterday about two o'clock, and
continued nearly all night. Many vessels which had left our port were driven
back, and much loss and damage is anticipated.
The bark AMERICAN REPUBLIC, in attempting to enter the harbor, got foul
of the break-water, stove in her larboard quarter, and sunk alongside the schooner
WYANDOTTE. She lies now with her head towards the south pier, full of water.
She was loaded with 19,000 bushels wheat for M.S. Hawley, from Chicago, and, it
is feared, will prove a total loss. The cargo is insured.
      Buffalo Daily Republic
      Wednesday, November 5, 1856

      . . . . .

Arrangements are being made to get up the bark AMERICAN REPUBLIC, sunk
alongside the break-water. The work will commence immediately.
      Buffalo Daily Republic
      Saturday, November 15, 1856

      . . . . .

The bark AMERICAN REPUBLIC, sunk alongside of the break-water, was pumped
out, raised and taken into dry-dock yesterday, by Capt. Gager. The damage which she
has sustained is considerable, and she will require a pretty round sum in order to put her
in thorough repair.
