Schooner ELK (C), cargo wheat, ashore at Fairport, Lake Erie. Got off.
      Buffalo Commercial Advertiser
      January 31, 1857 (1856 casualty list)

      . . . . .

The schooner ELK (Canadian) with a cargo of wheat from Goderich to Hamilton
is ashore at Grand River, Ohio. She will probably be got off.

      . . . . .

The Cleveland Herald of the 21st., says the schooner ELK has again been
got off, and is in the creek at Fairport. She is leaking, and is discharging her
cargo to come to Cleveland for repairs. Since she took on her cargo, she has
been ashore six times. Her master seems to have a better knack at ploughing
the land than the water.

      . . . . .

The schooner ELK, it will be recollected, went ashore twice at Fairport, two
or three weeks since. It was feared the last time, says the Cleveland Herald,
of the 8th, that she was injured, and one of Isaac Coffin's divers went down to
inspect her. He reported that two large stones were embedded in her planks, so
firmly that he could not get them out. The cargo was accordingly discharged,
reshipped on another vessel, and the ELK came to Cleveland for repairs. She
has just been put on dry-dock, and found to be a sound as ever, uninjured by rock
or stone - in fact the story of the diver was a gross lie. The cost to the
insurers by the lie, is about $700.
