Schooner NIAGARA (C), cargo coal, ashore at Port Hope. Total.
      Buffalo Commercial Advertiser
      January 31, 1857 (1856 casualty list)

      . . . . .

Oswego, Dec. 6. - The recent gale on Lake Ontario has proved very disastrou
to the shipping: The schooner NIAGARA, coal laden, from Oswego to Band Head,
went ashore at Port Hope.
The crew were in great peril, when Captain Wood of the schooner ANNA, and
Robert Campbell, mate of another schooner, made an attempt to rescue them, and
were both drowned.

Schooner NIAGARA ashore at Port Hope, struck the East Pier and grounded 200
yards from shore, to the eastward of where she struck.
      Toronto Globe
      December 5th., 12th. & 25th. 1856

      . . . . .

The schooner NIAGARA was wrecked at Port Hope, Lake Ontario, on Wednesday
last. It was blowing a terrific gale at the time, and the frost was so severe, that every
rope glistened with ice. Almost superhuman efforts were made by the people on shore to
save the crew. Two that went out to the vessel, and one of the crew were drowned by the
swamping of a small boat. The remainder were saved, as we learn from the Colonist.
