Brig DAVIS SMART, cargo wood, drifted foul of Chicago breakwater. Total loss, with 7 of her crew. Property loss $2,600. Boat's crew of the barque REPUBLIC (six), lost in attempting to save the crew of the DAVID SMART.

      SEVERE GALE IN CHICAGO. - We are indebted to Mr. D. W. C. Stevens, who has charge of the Western Union Telegraph office at the office at the Wadsworth House, for the following despatch:
      Chicago, 2-9 A.M. - Most disastrous gale yesterday and last night, ever before experienced at this point. Fifteen or sixteen lives lost; six vessels ashore, among them the brig DANIEL SMART is on the north side of the pier, with the entire crew, consisting of eight persons. A boat's crew who went to her rescue, consisting of seven persons, also lost; names unknown.

      Chicago, April 3. - The boat which went to the relief of the brig SMART yesterday, was manned by six sailors, who were all lost. The names of only two are known as yet - Captain C.B. Abramson of the schooner PIONEER, and Captain
Lewis Nelson of the schooner TROY. The crew of the SMART were Wm. Philips, Captain; Edward Stanley, mate; Wm. Leslie, Thomas McCall, R.E. Hall, jr., Wm. Williams, Robert Ayit and John Stancliff. All but Stanley were lost. The SMART was an old vessel and was owned by J.H. Einer of this city. - Cargo of wood - uninsured.
