STEAMBOAT EXPLOSION -- LOSS OF LIFE. -- About six o'clock Wednesday morning, while lying at the dock in Saginaw, the steamer CANADA collapsed one of her flues on the starboard side, resulting in the death of a wheelsman, watchman and fireman. The explosion was caused, doubtless, by the old and worn out condition of her boiler, as a light head of steam was on her at the time. It is said the iron at the spot where the collapse occurred was only one-sixteenth of an inch thick. The CANADA is an old boat, was burned about three years ago and rebuilt, the old boiler and machinery being retained. It has been employed in the towing service, and is owned by George King (captain of her) and Joseph Gerard, who bought the boat about three weeks ago. A son of Gerard, aged fifteen years, who acted as wheelsman, was killed. His body was brought to this city yesterday, by the FOREST QUEEN. The other two were the watchman Allison, and a fireman whose name we did not learn. The two latter were killed instantly, but young Gerard breathed until brought upon the dock, when he expired. The boat was otherwise uninjured, and so slight was the explosion, that those standing on the dock discovered it only by the escaping of the steam. -- Detroit Advertiser
